  1. Question:    What were the dates of, and how was art reflected in the two
  2. eras known as Romanticism and Impressionism?

  8. Romanticism began in the late 18th century and continues through today.  It
  9. encourages intuition, feeling, inspiration, and the genius of human
  10. creativity, over  reason or logic.  It looks on nature as something to be
  11. experienced, rather than clinically discussed and examined.  Romanticism was
  12. a reaction to industrial civilization.

  14. The Romantic believes in self governing, that the individual is responsible
  15. for their moral decisions. The French revolution was the first unfolding of
  16. the dynamism of Romanticism in Western civilization,  because of its fight
  17. for self rule and individual rights.

  19. There are different types of Impressionism (Mid 19th century):
  20.  
  21. 1) Broken color method:   objects are reproduced by means of brush strokes of
  22. various colors placed next to each other. Instead of mixing colors together
  23. on a palette, color is stroked on separately and the eye of the observer
  24. mixes them.  (Ex. Monet)

  26. 2) Using light in a different way:  using patches of color, rather than
  27. differences in value to imply lighting. (Ex. Manet)

  29. 3) Pointillism:  painting by means of dots of pure color. The most subtle
  30. ranges in form and color could be shown by changing the combination of colors
  31. of the dots.  (Ex. Surrat)
